Abbey Communication Newsletter – February 2015

David WoodNews

February was an exciting month at Abbey Communication. At home, our trainers and host families got together for an evening of Japanese culture. They enjoyed trying Japanese writing, origami, sake and sushi as well as dressing up in Japanese traditional dress. We are delighted to have developed a relationship with Helen Akiyama and her husband Takeshi, who live and work locally in Swindon, and specialise in raising cultural awareness between the UK and Japan. Helen organised a wonderful and entertaining evening, giving the hosts and trainers the opportunity to have some fun together.

Further afield, we have been developing connections with a language school in Dubai called Dar-el-Ilm. Our friend and previous Abbey Communication host family, Julie Cavendish, has moved to Dubai with her husband, and she is now the Foreign Language Coordinator with Dar-el-Ilm. Through Julie, Sarah had the opportunity to visit Dubai, give some language training, learn about the culture, and meet the team at Dar-el-Ilm, and the Arabic Language Centre. Sarah enjoyed the sunshine in the middle of our winter, was impressed by the architecture and learnt a lot about life in Dubai. We look forward to developing this relationship further.

Dar-el-Ilm is an ideal partner for Abbey Communication as they are a small, well established training centre, giving a personal, high quality service.

Increasing our cultural awareness is one of our passions, and we are also looking forward to helping others to do the same on our next International Communication course at the end of March. We also hope to meet some more new and old friends on immersion programmes during the summer.
